painting & decorating
Refurbished a centre for environmental education, Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, London, 2018 (50 volunteers, ©GiveToGet)
VOC-free painting projects are prepped with drop sheets, with tricky spots masking-taped. To ensure a sharp finish novices are given some pointers by the crew, who also keep an eye on spills to maintain a clear work area.
home making
Built furniture for a homeless shelter, Dallas, 2018 (single work-station; 600 total volunteers, ©GiveToGet)
Up-cycling furniture for reuse is a fun project, though sometimes new is needed. Kits of sustainability produced, non-toxic materials make it easy for the handy-challenged. For a durable finish. fast drying, VOC-free coatings are applied.
habitat for biodiversity
Constructed bird and bat boxes to foster biodiversity in urban parkland, Syracuse, 2018 (40 volunteers, ©GiveToGet)
It takes about 15 minutes for a novice to construct one species-specific bird or bat box, or bee hotel. Sometimes a non-toxic white coating is painted on the roof to reflect the sun. Boxes are given to stewards of local habitat, encouraging re-population of native species in urban areas.
tech outreach for seniors
Social connection through tech skills training for seniors, Sydney, 2019 (20 volunteers)
Understanding how tech can improve their day-to-day as well as better connect them with family and friends is a fun and accessible way for seniors to engage with people outside their circle. Insights and skills many people take for granted are fun to share and teach.
community gardens
Refurbished greenhouse, built and planted a community teaching garden, Memphis, 2017 (130 volunteers, ©GiveToGet)
Relative to site, there’re different types of raised beds to build, including wheelchair accessible. Sometimes reticulation is installed, sometimes green houses are built. Always a variety of select seedlings are planted, the area is mulched and job done with a satisfying watering.
place making
Painted murals throughout after-school clubhouse, Chicago, 2017 (100 volunteers, ©GiveToGet)
Mural artists can be engaged to create and outline works, giving volunteers a satisfying paint-by-numbers experience with stunning results. Under close supervision, sometimes people can freestyle, delivering a more personal experience and connection with place users.
light construction
Repurposed a gazebo as a meditation space at a women’s homeless-transitional shelter, Sydney, 2020 (60 volunteers)
In any team there are usually people with ambition and useful DIY skills. We’re always ambitious with our scope of work in order to drive the greatest transformation for our charity partners, and the most satisfying experience with greatest sense of achievement for volunteers.
trees trees trees
Reforested areas still decimated by Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, 2017 (40 volunteers, ©GiveToGet)
Places are made better with tree canopies, ideally natives to promote biodiversity, or fruiting trees for communities to harvest. Projects can be extended through a volunteer roster to nurture saplings.
beach clean-ups
Beach clean-up, cataloguing of rubbish, and habitat regeneration, Sydney Harbour, 2020 (60 volunteers)
Our waterways are downhill from everywhere. It’s astonishing what’s lurking under the surface and tragic when it impacts wildlife. In a very short time, thousands of pieces of rubbish–most of it plastic–can be removed from a coastline and catalogued for research teams.
teaching gardens
Built and planted school teaching food garden, New Orleans, 2017 (60 volunteers, ©GiveToGet)
With many nutritionally-devoid foods competing for young tastes, learning about the benefits of healthy food while growing it –outdoors or indoors– can also help parents and schools have a few more wins during meal times.
include the kids
Many projects can accomodate family and friends. Surprise visit from Taronga Zoo Mobile, Sydney, 2020
The scope of work for all projects can be widened so kids can participate in supervised low-skill activities. Budget permitting, related fun experiences are created to keep kids engaged and having fun, so parents can focus on their work!
container food
Community indoor agri-food sheltered from harsh winters, powered by solar, Detroit, 2017 (50 volunteers, ©GiveToGet)
The reality of highly water-efficient (up to 95% less water than conventional horticulture), chemical free, rapid year-round vegetable growing in urban/suburban neighbourhoods is to be promoted. Kitted-out, solar powered shipping container farms definitely deliver high impact.
